Infrastructure and network engineering for small teams
Freelance since 2019. I build and keep running the unglamorous part of a product: Linux servers, routing between networks, backups that are actually restorable, and monitoring that says something useful at three in the morning.
What I usually do
- Set up and maintain small fleets โ three to thirty machines, one or two providers.
- Network work: routing, tunnels, firewalls, DNS, keeping services reachable from where they should be.
- Backups and restore drills, because an untested backup is a rumour.
- Monitoring and alerting that pages a human only when a human is needed.
- Take over an inherited setup, document it, then either hand it back or stay on call.
How I work
Short engagements, usually two to six weeks, then an on-call arrangement if it fits. I work from my own laptop, keep everything in version control and write down what I changed โ the next person to touch the system is often me, six months later.
I do not take on projects where I would be the only person who understands the result without documentation, and I do not do "just click through this panel" work.
